So he took a seat in the next best position to remain in contact with his coaching team – in the press box just yards from the touchline.

And the Mail have given a rare insight into the emotional turmoil the Gunners boss goes through during matches.

Wenger was seen jumping to his feet to protest as a decision by referee Martin Atkinson went against his side.

He quickly remembered his surroundings and sheepishly sat back down in his seat perched among the working journalists just above the tunnel.

And there were moments when he waved his arms in anger and muttered words of protest to coach Jens Lehmann sat alongside him

But then he dropped his guard after seeing Chelsea awarded a free-kick for a foul on striker Morata.

Wenger regained his composure, clearly aware he could not go overboard with the rank and file of the media sat around him.

And he managed to see out the rest of the goalless first-leg draw without too much incident, knowing he will be back in his usual position for the return match.

The Gunners boss told the media after the match: “I think you are well treated in the stadiums because you have good positions.”

Wenger was banned from the touchline for three games having admitted an FA misconduct charge for his behaviour towards the ref after the game against West Brom.

He did not contest the charge of abusive language towards the officials after entering their dressing room after the controversial 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns.
