Ex-Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini and Ireland chief Giovanni Trapattoni apply for South Africa national team job

IT’S been a dismal few months for the South Africa national side.

First, Bafana Bafana failed to qualify for the African Cup of nations – then they were without a manager as Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba was sacked for “gross-misconduct”.

Fortunately for the 2010 World Cup hosts, their recent trials and tribulations haven’t put prospective candidates off, with a host of big names after the job.

According to reports former Manchester City and Inter Milan manager Roberto Mancini has applied for the role, along with fellow countryman, former Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni.

The South African Football Federation (Safa) indicated that there were over 60 applicants for the post.

Along with the two Italian’s CV’s is the resume of the man who led Cameroon to this year’s African Cup of Nations, Hugo Broos.

Other names to put their name into the ring are Sun Football columnist Lothas Matthaus and former Real Madrid gaffer Bernd Schuster.

South African officials have plenty of experience to choose from then as they look to put a bleak 2016 behind them, with Safa President Dr Danny Jordan stressing: "We want to have the process expedited as Bafana Bafana have a bumper 2017 season in which they need to compete and qualify on three fronts – namely CHAN, AFCON and the FIFA World Cup in Russia 2018."
