The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) has banned Bingham for six months from the sport.

But half of that will be suspended, meaning the current world number 10 will be out of action for just three months.

Bingham has also been fined a whopping £20,000, but the WPBSA said there was no suggestion he aimed to “influence matches or engage in any corrupt activity.”

The 41-year-old is believed to have splurged over £35,000 in bets on snooker in the past seven years.

And Bingham often used fake accounts to place them, which means the WPBSA were unable to discover if he won or lost.

Chairman Jason Ferguson said: “It is very disappointing to see such a high-profile player fall foul of the WPBSA betting rules.

“Stuart is a great competitor and I have no doubt he has always played to the best of his ability. This case shows that there are no exceptions to the rules.

“Players must understand that they cannot bet on snooker at all, even if they are not involved in a match or event. Any player found to breach the betting rules will face the most serious of consequences.”
