Fifa insists fans at the 2018 World Cup will need special ID cards in a bid to crack down on hooliganism

FIFA chiefs will attempt to crack down on football hooliganism at next year’s World Cup and this year’s Confederations Cup by issuing special ID cards to fans.

With both tournaments being held in Russia, huge concerns remain at the number of thugs picking fights with other sets of supporters.

Euro 2016 in France saw disgraceful scenes, mostly by Russia’s notorious ‘Ultras’, who invaded host city’s to reap havoc with rival fans.

Russia were handed a suspended disqualification by Uefa following the violent clashes with England supporters ahead of their game in Marseille.

And Colin Smith, director of competitions for Fifa, has faith in the Russian authorities to be responsible for issuing ID cards.

He said: "Every fan will be required to have a fan ID to enter the stadiums, both for the Confederations Cup and for Fifa World Cup, and so we have got trust in the authorities that everything will be done.

"What we can be sure of is that this will be a festival of football and there is no place in such festivals of football for those that are not here to support the sport or support the game."

The cards will include a photograph of the supporter and contact details.
