‘FOOTBALL HISTORY’ has been made after FIFA successfully tested video replays on Thursday night.
The offline experiment was conducted during France’s 3-1 friendly win over Italy, and FIFA president Gianni Infantino reckons it will change the way football is played.

Explaining the test helped prove the ref was right not to award Italy a controversial penalty for handball, Infantino said: “You could see that the referee stopped play for a couple of seconds and during those seconds the two referees in the truck verified that there was no penalty.
“We’ve seen football history here. We’re in 2016 so it’s about time to try it.
“Of course, we can’t resolve every problem that comes up but let’s see if we can give the refs a hand on the key situations, without interrupting play too much.”

FIFA will continue to hold tests throughout the season, with Italy’s Serie A, Germany’s Bundesliga, Australia’s A-League, America’s MLS and Portugal’s Primeira Liga all taking part.
It would be a bold move to introduce the technology around the world, with just disputed goals subject to scrutiny.
But Infantino assured the video replays would aim to affect matches as little as possible, with the extra eyes used only for goals being scored, players being sent off, penalties being awarded and cases of mistaken identity.
