Footballer turned boxer Curtis Woodhouse heavily linked with vacant Grimsby Town managers job

CONTROVERSIAL ex-footballer and former boxing champion Curtis Woodhouse has emerged as one of the favourites for the vacant managers job at Grimsby Town.

Former Sheffield United midfielder Woodhouse had a brief spell with the Mariners back in 2006, playing 19 games and scoring once in League 2.

After hanging up his boots in 2012, the former England U21 international managed Sheffield FC, Goole, Hull United, and currently Yorkshire outfit Bridlington Town, who play their football in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

But by no means is he just a footballer – the 36-year-old has also experienced success in the boxing arena, and memorably became the British light-welterweight champion in 2014.

Earlier this year, he sensationally claimed that a former boss used to say that if the drug testers are in that day, to go straight home if they were on any substance – in the wake of the Maria Sharapova drug controversy.

He also became a Twitter sensation in 2013 by publicly tracking down an internet troll and driving to confront him.

Woodhouse had just lost a controversial boxing match, and snapped after being on the receiving end of a torrent of abuse.

He appealed for help to find the tweeter and was soon provided with a concrete lead, before giving the keyboard warrior the fright of his life by tracking him down to the street he lives in.

Karl Robinson and Nigel Adkins currently lead the betting markets, but Woodhouse’s odds have shortened from a starting point of 33/1 to just 3/1 today.

And in a recent interview with the Grimsby Telegraph, he said: “The Grimsby job is definitely one that would interest me – but it will also interest plenty more managers out there.

“If someone had told me ten years ago, when I was a player at Grimsby, that I would move into management, I would have said they were crazy!”

Eighth-placed Grimsby got promoted from the National League last season back into the EFL, but lost their manager Paul Hurst to League 1 Shrewsbury Town earlier this week.
