Footballers failed THIRTEEN drugs tests in the last four seasons – but FA are keeping the names secret

THERE are 13 cases of failed drugs tests by footballers in the past four years – but their identities are being kept secret by the FA.

SunSport exclusively reported how Saido Berahino tested positive for Class A party drug MDMA in September.

Berahino claimed he didn't know why he wasn't playing for old club West Brom

The results were discovered at a routine test while at West Brom at the start of the season, and that led to his eight-week FA ban.

There were three positive tests last season, six in 2014/15, three in 2013/14 and one in 2012/13.

Former Everton starlet Jose Baxter is believed to account for at least two of the tests, while Championship outfit Wolves named goalkeeper Aaron McCarey as having failed a test in May 2015.

Baxter was plying his trade for Sheffield United in League One when he tested positive for cocaine in February 2016. He is without a club after being banned for 12 months, but Everton are reported to be keen to add him to their U23 section once this ends in June.

McCarey was banned from playing for four months, but strenuously denied knowingly taking any banned substances or performance enhancing drugs. He is currently playing for Ross County.

Drug tests are set to top 3,000 for the current campaign as the FA are keen to leave no stone unturned in their quest to keep the sport clean.

Berahino has since signed for Stoke City, and in his defence with the FA, he explained his personal situation and the fact he had suffered depression due to weight issues and had also turned to drink played a part in the failed test.
