Former Australia captain Steve Smith admits he cried for four days after sandpaper scandal


STEVE SMITH has revealed he cried for four days after being sacked and banned in the sandpaper scandal.

Former Aussie skipper Smith is suspended from top-level cricket but is preparing to resume his playing career in a Twenty20 tournament in Canada at the end of June.

He has spoken for the first time about his pain and shame.

At a school in Sydney, he told students: “To be honest, I probably spent four days in tears.

“I was really struggling mentally and I was lucky I had some close friends and family members I could speak to at all hours of the day.

“The people I had supporting me made a huge difference to the head space I am in now.”

Smith and vice-captain David Warner were banned by Cricket Australia for a year while opener Cameron Bancroft received nine months.

The Aussie white ball team, under new captain Tim Paine and new coach Justin Langer, arrive in the UK this week for five one-dayers and a T20 match.

They play Sussex in a warm-up game on Thursday.
