Lewis Hamilton booed by London crowd as F1 hits streets of the capital with Brit driver absent from the show

LEWIS HAMILTON’s name was booed by fans at the Formula One parade in London after his no-show.

The Brit was only only current F1 star not to take part in the sensational show in the capital hosted by the sport’s new owners Liberty Media.

Instead, the 32-year old is on a bizarre two-day break just before the British Grand Prix.

Liberty have already expressed their feelings that 19 of the 20 drivers cooperated, and then the fans jeered his name when it was announced by F1 champion, Damon Hill.

Hamilton’s boss at Mercedes, Toto Wolff, who granted the three-time world champion his mini break, tried to justify his driver’s failure to turn up.

He said: “Lewis feels that is is such a tough championship battle that he needed the days off after Austria….but you can see him at Silverstone.”

The future of the sport in Britain is uncertain after Silverstone bosses triggered a break clause in their contract.

The British Racing Drivers’ Club announced they will scrap the event after 2019 as they can no longer afford the spiralling costs.

But that decision could open the door for the capital to have Formula One cars roaring round closed London streets.

And fans got a glimpse of that action as cars and drivers were in and around the West End today for the F1 London Live event.

Trafalgar Square and Whitehall hosted cars in front of hundreds of fans before a parade in the evening.

The event was free to the public and gives fans a chance to see the cars up close,  ahead of the race at Silverstone this weekend.

It is claimed that now Silverstone have revealed they can no longer afford to host the Grand Prix, the Northamptonshire circuit could well lose the event to London.

Racing fans caught a glimpse of the 200mph cars, famous racing drivers and watch music acts perform in Trafalgar Square.

British driver, Jenson Button attended the spectacle in London today, but Lewis Hamilton did not as he was on an authorised two-day break.

Hamilton was pipped to the podium in the Austrian Grand Prix while his Mercedes teammate, Valtteri Bottas took first place.

His rival, Sebastian Vettel, now has a 20 point lead in the championship thanks to his second-place finish.
