Engand needed to avoid defeat to face Australia in the final but tries from Jermaine McGilvary,Gareth Widdop and Ryan Hall were not enough to secure a place in next weekend’s final on November 20 at Anfield.

A reflection of Australia’s dominance was the fact that Johnathan Thurston sucessfully kicked four conversions and two penalties.

There was a bust up after Gillet’s try which led to England skipper Sam Burgess punching David Klemmer and he was suprisingly not sent off for the incident.

Hall scored a try with five minutes remaining but it was too little too late.

The Aussies responded with moments remaining with a sensational try from Holmes to round off an impressive performance from Australia.
