Gareth Bale and Andy Murray beaten by Rory McIlroy to title of UK’s richest young sports star as the golfer pockets £110m


RORY McILROY is the richest young sports star in the UK — with a whopping £110million.

The Northern Ireland golfer, 29, did not win an event in 2017 yet he added a cool £28m to his fortune.

McIlroy, a four-time Major winner, signed a 10-year contract extension with Nike worth £74m as well an equally lucrative deal with club manufacturer TaylorMade.

Tennis star Sir Andy Murray is in second place with £83m.

The Scot has been out injured since Wimbledon last year but still raked in £6m over the past year, much of it through sponsorship.

Sports stars make up 17 of the richest people aged 30 or under in the new edition of the Sunday Times Young Rich List.

World heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is the big mover on the list, adding £20m to his bank account, which now stands at £35m.

AJ earned £18m for his title win over Joseph Parker in March.

Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale leads the charge for the footballers in third place.

The Welshman is paid an eye-watering £18.2m per year after tax, taking his overall wealth to £74m.

Theo Walcott, worth £26m, is the highest-placed English footballer while Manchester City’s Argentina striker Sergio Aguero is the richest UK-based footballer.
