Gareth Southgate: England interim manager to get the job on a full-time basis as FA warn rivals off position

GARETH SOUTHGATE is set to be named England’s next permanent manager, according to reports.

The Under-21s boss replaced disgraced Sam Allardyce on a temporary basis in September for World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia.

Southgate was also tasked with overseeing upcoming fixtures against Scotland and Spain, but The Telegraph claims he will land the Three Lions job on a full-time basis barring any disasters this week.

It’s claimed the FA have already told other candidates that the interim chief will take total control after the Spain match.

They’re said to have been extremely impressed by Southgate’s handling of dropped captain Wayne Rooney, and know that victory over Scotland will set England well on their way to qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

However, Southgate is facing an injury crisis ahead of Friday’s game after seeing Tottenham ace Dele Alli ruled out with a knee problem.

Southampton goalie Fraser Forster has been replaced by Sunderland youngster Jordan Pickford, while West Ham left-back Aaron Cresswell is in line to make his England debut in place of Danny Rose.

Leicester star Danny Drinkwater is also struggling with his fitness, but Kyle Walker is expected to be fine despite limping off in the north London derby draw against Arsenal on Sunday.
