Southgate’s £1.8m-a-year wage is still substantially less than the £3m his predecessor Sam Allardyce was on per year.

Southgate, 46, has agreed to a break clause to be activated if England flop at the 2018 World Cup finals, in return for an improvement in his basic wage.

The FA are planning to unveil the former Under-21 boss at a press conference on Thursday.

Southgate’s No 2 Steve Holland is determined to combine coaching roles with Chelsea and England for the rest of the season.

The incoming Three Lions boss wanted Holland to quit Stamford Bridge.

But with England only playing twice before the end of the domestic season, against Germany and Lithuania in March, Holland intends to continue with Chelsea.

The FA will hold interviews for the Under-21 job with caretaker Aidy Boothroyd likely to face competition from Phil Neville and Paul Clement.
