Gareth Southgate looks ever closer to getting England job full-time after lengthy meeting with FA staff over future plans including Wayne Rooney

GARETH SOUTHGATE was preparing for England duty on Tuesday — even though he has yet to be handed the manager’s job.

Just 24 hours after being interviewed for the top position in English football, Southgate was pictured in deep discussion with senior FA staff at a London hotel.

It proves beyond doubt that Southgate will get the job with his first game as full-time boss to be against Germany in a friendly in Dortmund on March 22 next year.

The former defender, who is set to be appointed within the next week, was talking for more than two hours to the FA’s head of teams and corporate security, Tony Conniford (next to Southgate), and Seni Majekodunmi (opposite), who is the England senior men’s team operations manager.

The trio were also heard discussing Wayne Rooney, who will not be captain for the friendly and is facing a fight to even be part of the Three Lions squad.

After the clash in Germany, England have a World Cup qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley four days later.

The Three Lions then travel to Glasgow for a massive qualifier against Scotland in June before a friendly with France in Paris.
