Gareth Southgate offered England manager’s job and is expected to be confirmed in the role on a permanent basis on Monday

GARETH SOUTHGATE has been offered the England manager’s job and is expected to be confirmed in the role on a permanent basis on Monday.

Southgate, who was formally interviewed for the job this Monday after an unbeaten four-match stint in caretaker charge, has held talks over a three-and-a-half-year contract.

And negotiations are said to be progressing smoothly – despite TV reports of a disagreement over the FA wishing to insert a break clause after the 2018 World Cup finals.

Southgate has always accepted that a break clause will be included.

Members of the FA’s finance committee are likely to hold a conference call at the weekend to rubber-stamp Southgate’s contract, rather than waiting for the full board meeting scheduled for next Wednesday.

He is likely to earn a basic salary of around £1.3million, with substantial bonuses if England qualify for Russia and then reach the knock-out stages.

Southgate, who intends to strip Wayne Rooney of the England captaincy before the team play again in March, will be permitted by the FA to appoint Chelsea coach Steve Holland as his full-time No 2 – two moves revealed exclusively by SunSport last week.

But the governing body must agree compensation with the Stamford Bridge club for Holland, who wants to make the move having been told he cannot combine the roles with club and country.

Southgate’s former role as Under-21 boss will now be vacant, with Phil Neville seen by FA insiders as the favourite to replace him, although a full interview process is expected.
