GARETH SOUTHGATE has finally been confirmed as the new England boss – on a salary of £1.8million a year.
The former Under 21s gaffer was made to wait by the FA as they searched for Sam Allardyce’s permanent successor.
But a number of impressive wins – as well as an admirable draw against Spain – will see Southgate land one of the most coveted jobs in world football this week.
Southgate’s representatives have successfully managed to convince the FA to increase their initial offer to an agreed £1.8million – in return for agreed to a break clause to be activated if England flop at the 2018 World Cup finals.
The deal however remains the lowest salary the FA have paid out to a full-time England manager since Kevin Keegan was in the hot seat 16 years ago.
Former Newcastle and Fulham manager Kevin Keegan pocketed £700,000-a-year when he took charge from February 1999 to October 2000.
The England manager’s salary then went through the roof.
The FA, led by the ambitious Adam Crozier, broke the bank to lure Keegan’s successor Sven-Goran Eriksson away from Lazio.
In 2006 Eriksson defended his amazing salary.
He said: “I never understood in this country that I’m accused of earning too much money. I could find at least 10 others who earn more than I do.”
The Swede’s replacement Steve McClaren was forced to settle for almost half of that on £2.5million-a-year.

But that figure more than doubled when Fabio Capello was put in charge, with the Italian banking an astonishing annual salary of £6million.
The former AC Milan, Real Madrid and Juventus boss took charge in December 2007 until he left in February 2012 after a dispute with the FA after they stripped John Terry of the captaincy over allegations of racism.
His time at the FA earned Capello an amazing sum of £25million – and that doesn’t take into account his pay-off of £1.5million even though he walked out of the job.
England then turned to Roy Hodgson was then handed a £3.5million-a-year deal to tempt him away from West Brom.
After Hodgson's failure at Euro 2016 the FA turned to Allardyce who accepted less than Hodgson had been on, signing a £3million-a-year contract.
However Southgate's salary of £1.8million a year still makes him one of the best paid managers in international football.

He is paid more than Didier Deschamps at France, who pockets half a million pounds less a year.
And Southgate's salary is double that of Portugal's Fernando Santos, who led his country to glory at Euro 2016.
