Great Britain’s women curlers lose 10-5 to Sweden in Winter Olympics semi-finals

GREAT BRITAIN’S women curlers have suffered a 10-5 semi-final loss to Sweden in Pyeongchang.

The curling team, featuring captain Eve Muirhead, vice-skipper Anna Sloan, Vicki Adams and Lauren Gray, will next play Japan, who lost to hosts South Korea in the other semi-final, for a Winter Olympic bronze medal.

Muirhead, who led her team to a bronze medal in Sochi, will now be aiming to repeat the feat on Saturday.

The 27-year-old told the BBC: “We still have a medal to play for, so we’ll give it our all.”

“We gave it our all and the Swedish girls were on fire. I missed a couple of key draws and you can’t afford to do that. We’re absolutely gutted. I know it will take time to get over that loss.

“We have trained hard for the last three or four years, but we were outplayed.”

Team GB found themselves 2-0 down after two ends, but rallied and a great shot by Muirhead levelled the score at 3-3 in the fifth.

Sweden then restored the lead and were 8-5 up in the eighth, and added two in the ninth to seal victory and secure their place in the final.

Reflecting on the loss, Muirhead said: “Any semi-final you lose is very, very hard. As a team we are a very strong unit. We will support each other as much as we can.”

UK Sport, who predicted GB athletes would win between four and 10 medals at the Games, set a target of at least five medal after more than doubling funding for this Olympic and Paralympic cycle to more than £32m.

Skelton sliders Lizzy Yarnold (gold) , Laura Deas (bronze) and Dom Parsons (bronze) and slopestyle skier Izzy Atkin (bronze) are Team GB’s sole medallists in Pyeongchang.
