Gurpreet Singh Sandhu becomes first Indian to play in the Europa League


GURPREET SINGH SANDHU has played his way into the footballing history books – again.

The goalkeeper became the first Indian to play a European league game in May when he played for his Norwegian side Stabaek in their top-flight clash with Idrettsklubben Kristiansand Start.

And now the Manchester United fan has done it again.

The Indian No 1 is now the first from his country to play in the Europa League after started for Stabaek against Wales’ Gap Connah’s Quay at Rhyl’s Belle Vue on Thursday.

It was also the first European game in the history of the Welsh side.

The first qualifying round first-leg ended in a goalless draw, but Sandhu’s historic game ended after 30 minutes.

The 24-year-old 6ft 4in stopper, who has 12 international caps for the Blue Tigers and has been with Stabaek since 2014 , came off with a suspected broken thumb.

Stabaek’s boss is former Scottish international and brief Watford boss Billy McKinlay.

McKinlay, who also played for Leicester, managed the Hornets for just eight days in 2014.
