Harry Kane joins Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen as one of seven Englishmen to score hat-tricks in Champions League after treble against APOEL

HARRY KANE became the seventh English player to score a Champions League hat-trick during Tottenham’s win against APOEL Nicosia.

Right foot, left foot and headed efforts from their No1 centre-forward earned Spurs the “perfect” victory as they made it six points from six in Cyprus.

With two goals in the 3-1 opening matchday victory over Borussia Dortmund, Kane has now leapt to the top of the scoring charts for this season’s Champions League campaign.

His three goals against Nicosia saw him enter the history books.

Only six of his fellow countrymen had managed to net a treble in the modern-day Champions League.

The first was scored way back in 1995.

But Kane, 24, becomes the first Englishman to score three times in a match since Danny Welbeck three years ago.

Here are England’s other Champions League hat-trick heroes.

Mike Newell, Blackburn 4 Rosenborg 1 — 1995

With reigning Premier League champions Rovers already eliminated from the group stage with one game remaining, Newell clearly decided he’d ensure they went out in style.

Alan Shearer gave the hosts the lead via a 16th-minute penalty before future Tottenham striker Steffen Iversen equalised on 30.

However, Newell restored Blackburn‘s lead a minute later — and nine minutes after that had completed his hat-trick.

Andy Cole, Feyenoord 1 Manchester United 3 — 1997

Sir Alex Ferguson‘s men made it four wins from four in Rotterdam to book their place in the quarter-finals for the second consecutive season.

And, Cole, whose place had come under threat following the arrival of Teddy Sheringham, proved his worth with all three as United navigated through a difficult group which included Juventus.

The Red Devils’ Champions League campaign came to an abrupt end at the hands of Monaco at the next stage.

The Toon miraculously qualified through their first group in the final minute of the last game.

Before being placed alongside Barcelona and Inter Milan in the second group phase.

Shearer’s treble against the German side — who they beat home and away — was one of their few highlights as they finished third.

One of the most famous debuts of all-time.

Rooney became the world’s costliest teenager when he joined from Everton — but his introduction was delayed due to the broken metatarsal he suffered at Euro 2004.

When he finally did play, he hit three stunning strikes in front of the Old Trafford crowd.

Michael Owen, Wolfsburg 1 Manchester United 3 — 2009

The Red Devils had been finalists for the past two seasons, but were reeling from the losses of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

And the very fact Owen was a first team player, showed they were slowly moving away from the elite.

But the former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker, then 29, showed he still possessed quality in front of goal with a lethal performance against the reigning German champions.

The England striker had to win over the Gunners having spent most of his career declaring his love for boyhood side United.

And this treble — on the back of an opening day defeat away at Dortmund — went some way to winning them over.

Inevitably, Arsenal‘s campaign was over at the first knock-out stage, as they were beaten on away goals by Monaco.
