Kohli, 29, will now stay in India to receive treatment in a bid to be fit for his nation’s Test match with Afghanistan.

The arrival of arguably the finest Test batsman on the planet had Surrey – and the County Championships as a whole – hugely excited.

However, Kohli’s first-ever stint in England has been called-off after picking up a neck injury last week.

Now, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has revealed: “This decision was taken following assessments by the BCCI medical team, subsequent scans and a specialist visit.

“The Team India captain will now undergo a period of rehabilitation under the supervision of the BCCI medical team.”

The news will come as a bitter blow to the Oval outfit, who will now not have Kohli available – having been slated to play in all three formats.
