Dan Kneen dead aged 30 – Isle of Man TT rider dies after crash in practice for island’s famous race


ISLE OF MAN TT rider Dan Kneen has been killed in a crash aged 30.

The resulting blaze led to practice sessions being red flagged as he died at the scene.

A second racer was airlifted to a nearby hospital following a subsequent collision with a course car.

Manx speedster Kneen was racing for the BMW Motorrad UK team, who released a brief statement.

It read: “BMW Motorrad UK would like to pass along our deepest condolences and sympathy to Dan Kneen’s family, friends, team and fans following this evening’s news.”

An earlier statement issued on behalf of ACU Events Ltd read: “TT Race organisers ACU Events Ltd can confirm that a rider was involved in a collision with a course car at Ballacrye during this evening’s qualifying session at the Isle of Man TT Races.

“The rider has been taken by airmed to Nobles Hospital.

“This followed an earlier incident during the Superbike session at Churchtown, which the course car was attending.”

The first TT was held in 1907 and has been running on the current 37-mile course since 1911.

In total, 147 people have died on the narrow course which can see competitors topping 200mph.

Tomorrow will see another packed evening of practice ahead of the weekend racing.
