The Arsenal midfield star blocked a stinging drive from Danny Drinkwater ten minutes after the break in the goalless Carabao Cup semi-final at Stamford Bridge.

And after briefly coming back onto the pitch, Wilshere then hit the floor before hobbling off to be replaced by Mohamed Elneny.

After the game, Wenger said: “It is an ankle, sprain from what I’ve heard right now.

Will he be available for Sunday and how long will he be out? I don’t know.”

The injury did not look too bad – but that has appeared the case in the past for Wilshere before spending months on the sidelines.

He has played 19 games since September when he returned from five months out with ankle trouble sustained while on loan at Bournemouth last season.

A similar problem cost Wilshere 47 games during the 2015-16 season.

Any period on the sidelines could come as a major blow to his hopes of heading to Russia 2018 this summer.

Wilshere is set to be handed a Gunners deal on the basis that he had appeared to prove his fitness to Arsene Wenger.

Wilshere, 26,  played six games in 21 days over the festive period and netted his first goal since 2015 in the 2-2 draw with Blues on January 3.

The Gunner have been dealt another blow to their midfield with Wenger confirming that Mesut Ozil has seen a specialist over his knee injury.

Ozil has carried the problem for a fortnight and missed Arsenal‘s draw at West Brom on New Year’s Eve.

Explaining why Ozil missed the clash with Chelsea, Wenger said: “He is recovering from his knee problem.

ALEXIT Alexis Sanchez named on bench for Arsenal.. and fans reckon that means he is off to Man City

“He has seen a specialist today, we hope it will be short term.

“He came in yesterday and couldn’t practice. We hope for Sunday.”
