Jamie Murray gets the rub of the green but not the grub of the Queen as he wins at the O2 after challenging a call


JAMIE MURRAY got what he wanted when a successful challenge earned him and partner Bruno Soares victory at the O2.

But Murray revealed he had been left feeling short-changed after the second of two recent visits to Buckingham Palace in a single week.

The doubles king had already been to the royal house once to receive his OBE and then attended a state banquet for the president of Colombia, home country of his wife Alejandra.

Asked what the food had been like, Murray said: “The thing was, you serve yourself. They bring it round and you take it off the plate and serve yourself.

“I just assumed it was, like, one piece for each person. You know, couples, like, they don’t sit next to each other.
“At the end of the meal, I went to my wife. I said: ‘I think I’m going to need to get some more food.’
“She says: ‘Why didn’t you take what you wanted?’
“The two guys she was sitting next to were, like, piling it in. They were a bit more experienced, I think, in these affairs.”

But Murray was pleased to find that guests at the Palace knew that he and Soares, as well as brother Andy, were both trying to seal the No 1 position in the year-end rankings.

Murray, 30, said: “We had a really nice night, met a lot of nice people. They were all kind of rooting for us to try to finish at No. 1.

“They were kind of on top of what we were doing. Andy, as well.”

Murray said: “Well, Prince Charles, he was, yeah. The Queen, I laughed because she said to the Colombian president, when I met him, she's like, ‘I've seen him play tennis before,’ which I thought was quite funny.”

Murray and Soares beat Max Mirnyi and Treat Huey 6-4 7-5 in their first match at the O2 after Murray rightly challenged the lack of call when their opponents’ shot went out.
