“But I know that retiring now is right. I’ve always said I want to leave my sport on a high and have no regrets and I can truly say that.

“Also a huge thank you to all those people who have supported and followed my career over the years x”.

Ennis-Hill was the face of the home Olympics in 2012 — and, despite enormous pressure, she didn’t disappoint.

She produced a breathtaking heat which set the mode for what was to come.

The Sheffield-born ‘Golden Girl’ breezed through her event — becoming Britain’s first of three gold medal-winners on one the country’s proudest sporting days.

At this summer’s Olympics in Rio, she conceded her title to Belgium’s Nafissatou Thiam by 35 points, despite a brave effort.
