But he recently came back in April following WrestleMania 33 to become general manager of Monday Night RAW.

And the 48-year-old has told The Sun he will make a comeback to the squared circle in what would be one of the most anticipated returns ever.

Angle said: “You’ll see me back in the ring, for sure. I don’t know when, but I can’t wait.”

The Olympic hero also spoke of how much the WWE has changed since last appeared in 2006.

He added: “You realise you’re in a different time in society. The wrestlers are different, they’re not the same as they were.

“They have different habits, they’re healthier now, they’re more prone to taking care of themselves.

“There is a great wellness and fitness policy, the physical is hard as hell to pass.

“There is a great drugs policy, so you have to commend the WWE on taking care of their athletes right now.”

And he also revealed how much fun he is having with the company after a much-publicised rift with WWE chiefs.

Angle said: "There was never supposed to be a GM role. I don't know if it was Mick Foley's hip or WWE just decided they wanted to bring my on the TV.

"It's been a lot of fun. I love being with the guys and girls and every week you get a closer bond with them.

"I'm obviously from a different generation so it's kind of different for me to be here now.

"They've welcomed me and made me feel at home, I'm having a great time."
