Edmund seemed to be in trouble when he received treatment for a finger injury during the course of losing the second set to Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics.

But the British No 1 recovered his composure to fashion a 6-0, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Edmund took charge from the off against a nervous-looking opponent and served him a “bagel” in just 27 minutes.

But alarm bells were ringing when former junior Wimbledon champion Fucsovics claimed a one-sided second set.

The Brit got back in track in the third set, racing into a 3-0 lead.

But he did not have it all his own way in the fourth, saving three break points from 0/40 down in the fifth and finally breaking his opponent’s serve in the eighth.

Edmund will now play No 18 seed Fabio Fognini in the third round on Saturday.

He added: “It was job done in the end. I made life difficult for myself in the second set.

“Tennis is tricky in that way when you are cruising, he holds at the start of the second and he is on the board and has a bit of confidence.

“It’s something to learn from, but I am happy to come through.

“When I am playing at my best it is very good.
