Laura Kenny criticises changes to omnium after winning two consecutive Olympic golds in the event

LAURA KENNY has told fans not to expect golden legs to be at her Olympic best in London tonight.

The Rio 2016 heroine, who collected her third and fourth games golds in Brazil, takes to the omnium for the first time tonight since August at London Revolution.

Kenny faces new rule changes in her beloved event – which reduces from seven races to four – with the IOC wanting the omnium to be more telly friendly.

The 24-year-old, who got married to fellow Team GB star Jason Kenny after their Olympic escapades, reckons cycling’s big-wigs haven’t got the new four-event omnium quite right though.

Kenny said: “They’ve changed it every Olympic cycle. After London the omnium changed, the points race went to the end and then the points were added. Then this time the omnium has changed to one day.

“I feel like the event being on one day is fine. But this tempo race just isn’t working. They’ve changed it so this is the first time the new rules apply.

“Or if they go back, I liked it one day with five events, way back when it started in 2010 when it initially came in. But you lose the elimination race then.”

Kenny will sport the Rainbow Jersey she claimed on the same track back at March’s World Championships – but she has told fans not to expect too much after honeymooning with hubby Jason in a campervan around Europe.

She said: “I don’t want people to expect me to win. It’s not going to happen. I know what form I’ve got.

“For me it’s about learning the new omnium for starters. Apparently I get to wear my world champion’s kit even though it’s completely different.

“After London it all changed. At least I got to wear my world champ’s kit then but at least the events were still the same. Whereas this is completely different. So for me it’s about learning about this new omnium.

“I do miss racing. So getting on and racing my bike and giving back to the crowd. There will be a lot of people supporting me through London who didn’t travel to Rio, so haven’t seen me since, it’s about giving back them as well.”

LAURA KENNY returned to racing at the Final Round of Revolution Series Women’s Elite Championship at Lee Valley VeloPark, London (December 2-3). Last tickets remaining at www.cyclingrevolution.com
