Man quizzed by police in connection with historical sex abuse linked to Southampton in the 1980s
A MAN has been interviewed under caution by Hampshire Police as part of their investigations into allegations of historical child sexual abuse in football.
The 64-year-old man, who cannot be named, was taken in for questioning earlier this week as inquiries continued about claims of incidents linked to Southampton Football Club.
SunSport understands at least ten people contacted authorities late last year with reports of possible sexual abuse at the club during the 1980s.
A Hampshire Police statement confirmed: “As part of Hampshire Constabulary’s investigation into allegations of non-recent child abuse within the football community (Operation Quantum), a 64-year-old man from Southampton has been interviewed under caution in a police custody suite.
“This remains an active, significant, and complex investigation undertaken by specialist officers from Hampshire Constabulary’s Major Crime Team.
“Officers still encourage any victims of such abuse to contact detectives from our designated Operation Marmion team on 101, or call the 24 hour NSPCC hotline on 0800 023 2642.”
The news is the latest development in the nationwide investigations into historical sex abuse in football that emerged last November.
Former Crewe Alexandra coach Barry Bennell appeared in court this week charged with 12 historical child sexual abuse offences.
