Man United transfer news: Gary Neville says Gareth Bale could be Manchester United game-changer like a Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo

GARETH BALE could be a “game-changer” for Manchester United in the mould of Lionel Messi or Cristiano.

That is the view of Red Devils legend Gary Neville as he revealed his hopes of his former side landing the Welshman.

Bale, 28, produced a stunning display from the bench to score twice and seal a third consecutive Champions League triumph for Real Madrid against Liverpool last week.

But he hinted at a move away after the clash due to a lack of playing time at the Bernabeu.

United have been interested in the attacker for a while, and Neville believes the star’s arrival could prove to be the difference in the Old Trafford club’s attempts to topple their rivals Man City.

Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, Neville said: “I’ve got a lot of admiration for him as a player.

“I’d like to see Messi play for United or Ronaldo or Neymar or all these players, but the reality is they’ve got to want to come to the club.

“That’s the first question that needs to be asked.

“If he wants to come to United then absolutely, yes, because he’s a fantastic player and he is a game changer.

“For me every top club is looking for that player who is the difference, who can turn the big games.”

Mourinho is expected to have a busy summer as he looks to transform his squad.

And Neville believes United fans have a lot to be optimistic about if the right additions are made ahead of the new campaign.

He added: “Once the disappointment finishes for all players and the coaching team and the fans, you always have that optimism for next season.

“That’s the way football always is. You always feel optimistic as a United fan about the next season and what the team can achieve.

“I’ve never – whether it be as a player, fan growing up, now today, never not felt optimistic going into a season. I’m positive for next season.”
