Manchester City must dominate world football if they want to be up there with the elite, says Vincent Kompany

VINCENT KOMPANY admits Manchester City will have to dominate English football before they can start calling themselves special.

The City skipper insists even winning the title this season will be nothing out of the ordinary for the club.

The centre-back, 31, said: “I don’t want to put people on a pedestal when we haven’t achieved all of our targets.

“We have won the title with Mancini and with Pellegrini, scoring hundreds of goals has been a feature of this club for many years now.

“So we can only say that this team will be better than the previous ones if we can win the Premier League then go again and again.

“I want to keep that hunger in the team. So all I can say is well done for what we have done so far this season but we have to keep going.”

City are currently 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League — with a game in hand — and need 18 points from their remaining 11 games to be certain of winning the title.

With the Carabao Cup in the bag, Kompany is now targeting Champions League success.

They look certainties for the quarter-finals after crushing Basel 4-0 in the away leg of their last-16 tie earlier this month.

And Kompany said: “There is belief that we can do well in the Champions League but we are not favourites above the big clubs like Madrid and Barcelona.

Dynasties that didn't quite happen

ARSENAL 2001-02
Arsene Wenger suggested his Double winners could go through the next season unbeaten. Instead, they blew the title in the last few weeks as United roared back.

ARSENAL 2003-04
Wenger’s prediction came true a year later. And his Invincibles appeared to be the template for the new millennium — power, pace and purpose. But, within 12 months, they had been overtaken by Chelsea’s new money.

CHELSEA 2004-05
Jose Mourinho’s first Blues champions were a perfect fusion of determination and talent. They easily retained the title and looked set to dominate. Yet losing out in 2006-07 was the beginning of the (first) end for the Special One.

CHELSEA 2009-10
Carlo Ancelotti’s Blues hit a record 103 goals, winning the first leg of a Double by putting eight past Wigan. But the Italian was axed a year later. His crime? Finishing second.

MANCHESTER CITY 2013-14
Winning the title back — thanks to Liverpool’s late meltdown — was meant to be the platform for Manuel Pellegrini’s side to flourish. Instead they went backwards, quickly.

CHELSEA 2014-15
Mourinho’s third Chelsea title was a masterclass in wringing the maximum from his players. But the squad were drained, physically and mentally and the Portuguese coach was sacked before Christmas the following season.

“PSG are a great team but they’ve gone to Madrid and we all saw what happened there. So we have to be careful about saying too much.

“We are just trying to fight our way in there with the Champions League contenders and maybe shake things up a little bit.

“But it’s too early to call it and first we have to complete the second leg against Basel.”

Kompany looks set to have Sergio Aguero alongside him after the striker promised to see out his contract after leading City to another trophy.

The Argentine’s future has again been in doubt this season, with Pep Guardiola showing interest in Alexis Sanchez.

But Aguero has dealt with the speculation by scoring more, with his opener against Arsenal on Sunday bringing up 30 for the season.

His current deal lasts until 2020, meaning he would have spent nine years with City.
Aguero, 29, said: “While I have a contract, I’ll stay here. I’m very happy. Guardiola is one of the best coaches in the world and the most demanding I’ve had.”
