But Sam Allardyce is a long-time admirer of the centre-half and knows his contract is up next year.

And the Sunday Mirror claim that the Toffees are going to test United’s resolve at the end of the season by making a cut-price offer for the ex-Fulham man.

Smalling has been at Old Trafford since 2010 after joining from the Cottagers.

He made just 13 Premier League appearances for Mourinho during the Portuguese manager’s first campaign in charge following the arrival of Eric Bailly.

And his days looked to be numbered when Victor Lindelof was signed from Benfica last June.

But he has battled back and figured 21 times for the Red Devils in the top-flight.

However, Mourinho is looking for defensive reinforcements again.

Barcelona star Samuel Umtiti is the latest name linked with the club.

Reports have also claimed that United are battling with the La Liga giants for Stefan De Vrij.

And if Jose is able to bring in a new recruit, then he may decide to cash-in on Smalling instead of risk losing him for free in a year’s time.

West Brom, Leicester, Crystal Palace and Burnley are all among a host of other clubs interested in the England international along with Everton.
