Manchester United and Tottenham at loggerheads over £55m deal for Toby Alderweireld

MANCHESTER UNITED and Tottenham are at loggerheads over a £55million deal for Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgium international remains one of United’s top targets in a summer of big spending.

But after tabling a bid of £55m, the handsome sum has been knocked back by Spurs chief Daniel Levy, who wants more for the centre back, 29.

Ed Woodward still has a trick up his sleeve in that Spurs are interested in signing 22-year-old winger Anthony Martial, according to the Evening Standard.

Alderweireld joined Spurs from Southampton in 2015, following Mauricio Pochettino after stints at Ajax and Atletico Madrid.

But he appears to have fallen out with his Argentine boss this season after refusing to sign a new contract, but Pochettino managed to play him in six of Spurs’ last eight matches.

He did not feature in Jose Mourinho’s side’s 2-1 comeback victory in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

However, Alderweireld admitted he was relaxed about his future and left it up to the club to decide his fate.

DAVE KIDD Marcus Rashford is a marvel…. how the hell does Jose Mourinho not rate the Manchester United and England starlet?

He said, while on World Cup duty: “I have another two years contract, so Tottenham decide about my future.

“Of course I have my own idea, but that is not the case now.

“The past season was tough, but I’m glad that I could play the last four matches.

“That means that I am ready for the World Cup.”
