Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho went “absolutely ballistic” at ref Mark Clattenburg

JOSE MOURINHO launched a blistering attack on referee Mark Clattenburg during Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Burnley, according to eye witness accounts.

Manchester United’ s under-pressure boss was left incensed after his side were denied a first-half penalty and he confronted the official in the tunnel at half-time.

He felt his side should have been awarded the spot-kick after Jon Flanagan's challenge on Matteo Darmian.

The Daily Mirror revealed the Portuguese "completely lost it" during his furious tirade.

Clattenburg, who sent him to the stand, mentioned the incident in the report but it is understood the County Durham official will say he does not deserve a a heftier punishment than the standard one-match ban.

He will find out his fate today when the FA decide what course of action to take.

While the normal punishment in similar cases is a one-game touchline ban, that can be increased.

Mourinho's past record could count against him but he looks set to avoid an automatic stadium ban because his bust-up with Clattenburg came six days after a 12-month probation ran out.

That was carried over following last season's one-game ban in the wake of a row with referee Jon Moss at West Ham while he was boss of Chelsea.

However, the ex-Real Madrid and Inter boss, 53, also is also looking at a fine for comments he made about ref Anthony Taylor in the build-up to last week's goalless draw against Liverpool.

United have endured a stuttering start to the season and are currently eighth in the table.

England and Reds left-back Luke Shaw hopes any potential ban will not prove costly.

He said: "It's always nice to have him on the side because he likes to give information out to especially full-backs like me when I am on his side.

"But of course we get to do what he wants doing the whole week so we've got him for the whole week, so there's no sort of worries if he's not going to be there.

"We'll keep strong and if he's not going to be on the sidelines, we've got Rui (Faria, United assistant manager) as well who is another very strong character as well."
