Manchester United exile Wayne Rooney comforted by Anthony Crolla after being left out of Red Devils’ Europa League squad

JOSE MOURINHO is hoping to turn Manchester United into heavyweights on the field.

And the Red Devils are sure to have picked up a trick or two about going the distance when boxer Anthony Crolla paid a visit to the Aon Training Complex on Wednesday.

The lifelong United fan gave Mourinho’s men a timely boost ahead of tomorrow’s Europa League clash following the derby defeat to Manchester City last weekend.

Crolla is an avid supporter and regularly attends both home and away games, although he won’t be travelling to the Netherlands as he prepares for his unification battle against Jorge Linares at the Manchester Arena on September 24.

The 29-year-old WBA lightweight champ is good mates with Wayne Rooney, who is a big boxing fan.

The pair struck up a friendship when Crolla was hospitalised following a break-in at his house in December 2014, with Rooney sending the ace a signed shirt from all the United players.

The skipper has since been to watch Crolla in a number of fights, and the pair were snapped looking as thick as thieves as they shot the breeze at Carrington – with Rooney looking relaxed despite being left out of Jose Mourinho’s Europa League squad.

Crolla also found time to hang out with Ashley Young and Michael Carrick, with the trio sharing a couple of jokes in the sunshine.

And it’s likely Rooney and Co will be able to attend Crolla’s next big battle, with United hosting Leicester at Old Trafford earlier in the day.
