It would take Carrick into his eleventh season at Old Trafford after he joined the Red Devils from Tottenham in 2006.

The ex-West Ham midfielder’s representatives have not been spoken to about the deal by United, but talks are due to start shortly.

Carrick has been one of the main reasons United's season has turned around, not losing in the 15 matches he has started.

A United insider said: “An announcement is expected shortly on Michael Carrick. He wants to stay at the club.

“Jose has been speaking to the money people and it looks like he has got his way. The deal hasn't been put forward to Carrick yet.

“He is being offered similar terms to what he is on now. Jose cannot stop raving about him behind the scenes.

“Jose also feels vindicated as it was his decision to sanction his stay last summer. It has all worked out well in the end.”

SunSport exclusively told earlier this week how Carrick has not been offered a new contract by Manchester United yet.

His deal runs out at the end of this campaign, and he is now free to talk to foreign clubs and sign a pre-contract for next season.

Mourinho admitted in November that he wanted to keep the former England ace, revealing that he had “always loved him”.

The Special One said at the time: “Michael is 35 years old and it is very sad to know that time flies for every one of us.

“He is such a fantastic player and I’ve always loved him.

“It is just a pity instead of being his manager when he was 25, I am his manager when he is 35.”
Ex-Birmingham and Swindon loanee Carrick joined United from Spurs for £14m.

He has gone on to make 300 appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Mourinho.
