United believe next year could be their final chance of getting a substantial transfer fee.

And Old Trafford chiefs are already actively looking for a superstar to replace him – with Real Madrid ace Gareth Bale their number one target.

A United source said: “Rooney’s recent comments about wanting to extend his contract certainly pricked a few ears.

“There are people inside the club who feel it could be their last and only shot to avoid him staying another year and then entering his final 12 months.”

Rooney – who has been at the club for twelve years – wants to end his career in Manchester.

But it is thought he could leave in the hope of regular playing time next season if England manage to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The former Everton striker is attracting interested from China where teams are willing to pay huge money to sign him.

The Toffees are also interested in taking him back, but United would have to slash their asking price for that to happen.

The MLS is thought to be Rooney’s desired next destination with LA Galaxy, Orlando City, and New York City FC all interested.

The United source added: “Unless he starts scoring 30 goals a season again, then his huge wages are bringing a sharper focus to his long-term situation.”

Rooney joined the Red Devils from Everton for around £25m in 2004.

He has scored 179 goals in 372 appearances for the club, helping them win five Premier League titles.
