Maria Sharapova knocked out of French Open after being thrashed by Garbine Muguruza

GARBINE MUGURUZA thrashed Maria Sharapova to underline her title credentials.

Muguruza, the 2016 champion, destroyed the two-time Roland Garros winner 6-2 6-1 in 70 minutes of embarrassingly one-sided tennis.

Muguruza said: “I’m very pleased. It’s a quarter final and I’m playing a great champion.

“Today I had to bring my best tennis. I’m very pleased with my performance.

“It’s getting tougher and tougher, but I love these rounds, I love the French Open and I’m just excited to keep playing matches.”

Muguruza dominated from first ball to last, breaking the Russian’s serve at the start of the match and at the end.

Once the Spaniard found her range, Sharapova seemed powerless to stop her.

The Russian was guilty of throwing in double faults and errors at bad times but she was really given little chance to impose herself.

It remains unclear whether Serena Williams will regain enough form and fitness to be a Grand Slam champion again, especially after she pulled out of her clash with Sharapova.

But the Russian’s poor display more than a year into her comeback must raise serious questions about whether she can lift another Major title.

And Wimbledon 2017 queen Muguruza, on this form, must be favourite to claim this year’s crown in Paris and perhaps replace Williams as the major force in women’s tennis.

Muguruza will face either Romania’s world No1 Simona Halep or Germany’s Angelique Kerber in the last four
