The 54-year-old left Rangers last month having secured the Glasgow side’s return to the Scottish Premiership and is joined by long-time assistant David Weir.

After a non-league playing career and years spent working as a financial trader, he began his full-time coaching career with Watford’s academy.

In February 2011, he became Brentford coach, and then manager in December 2013 where he led them to promotion to the Championship, achieving a fifth placed finish with the Bees before losing in the play-offs.

He moved north of the border to Rangers in 2015, steering them back into the top flight and winning the Scottish Challenge Cup.

His departure from Rangers was bizarre in itself, with the Ibrox club announcing that they had accepted the resignations of Warburton and Weir.

But SunSport revealed a stunned Warburton knew NOTHING of his sudden exit from the club after 20-months in charge.

Forest have not had a permanent manager since January when Philippe Montanier was axed – with Academy manager Gary Brazil in temporary charge since despite investment by US investor John Jay Moores.

They face Derby County in a fierce local derby this weekend – the Rams themselves having hired former Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett as their new manager today.
