The Brit was 43 points behind rival team-mate Nico Rosberg when the two clashed in the Spanish GP in May but now looks nailed-on for his fourth world crown.

And the 31-year-old’s boss at Mercedes, Toto Wolff, says no-one can touch his driver when he is in his pomp.

He said: “That guy is very talented and [has] speed and, on his day, I think he is unbeatable.”

Hamilton says he was flattered by Wolff’s comments and then turned his attention to opening up a larger gap in the championship – despite being so far adrift after he and Rosberg crashed out in Barcelona.

And he says he got his fighting spirit from when his dad took him boxing as a 10 -year-old and got him to slug it out with the big kids.

He said : “I never feel invincible or unbeatable but I feel when I’m at my strongest, number one is where I can be.

“At the time, in Spain, I felt things couldn’t go any further. There was a lyric – it might have been one of my songs – where you feel like you’ve hit rock bottom but you’ve actually gone through the ground and gone further.

“I’m only human. There were lots of things going through my mind at the time. I was just trying to bat them off. I’ve got great people round me who depend on me to be upbeat.

“I know that I should never give up.

“I remember my Dad put me in a boxing ring with this thug who beat the crap out of me in the first round.

“He was bigger and stronger than me. I felt ‘I don’t want to get back in there.’ But I went back in there and whipped his butt. It showed me never to quit.”
