A MEXICAN pro footballer has been arrested at the United States border accused of trying to smuggle crystal methamphetamine into the country.

At a hearing on Tuesday, Gomez remained detained in California as he was deemed a flight risk by the judge.

According to the Los Angeles Times, court documents say that Gomez – an American citizen – told a Customs officer that he was travelling to the US for work.

The officer searched the car and noticed that a spare tire in the boot of the car had hard spots and wasn’t the usual weight.

After cutting into the spare tire, the officer is said to have found 23 packages – the crystal substance inside was later tested positive as meth.

A further inspection later on saw 11 more packages found in the panels of the car.

During his interview with special agents, Gomez said he owned the car but had traded it away three months ago to an unnamed person – and then got it back about a month ago.

He said that he left his home in Tijuana, northern Mexico, and planned to have breakfast at a Denny’s chain just across the border in National City before returning to Mexico for training that same day.

Although not hugely popular in the UK, the US is in the midst of a meth epidemic – more than a million people said they had used the drug in the past year in a survey conducted in 2012 and the industry is valued at more than $5billion.

Club Tijuana, who last won the title in 2012, are currently fourth in the Mexican Premier League.
