Mexico legend Cuauhtemoc Blanco ‘fears for his life’ after being accused of ordering cartel hit on fair organiser

MEXICAN football legend Cuauhtemoc Blanco “fears for his life” after being accused of ordering a hit on a man who organised a local fair.

Blanco – famous for the “bunny hop” trick he performed in the 1998 World Cup – is the current mayor of Cuernavaca, a city 50 miles south of Mexico City.

The 44-year-old has been accused of paying around £8,300 to have 24-year-old fair organiser Juan Manuel Garcia Bejarano killed.

The former Mexico international, who won 120 caps, has been accused by the alleged hitman who carried out the slaying.

Blanco said: “Yes, I’m afraid for my life, for my family, but I’m still here. I’m going strong.

“This, on the contrary, still gives me strength to keep fighting against these injustices that really are aberrations and a sickness.

“Why do they do it? You (in the press) ask them. Why the f*** do they do it?”

Garcia was apparently shot while on horseback during a procession that was supposed to kick off the fair.

The governor of Morelos, Graco Ramirez, have blamed the killing on organised crime – saying the man being held is a member of a Jalisco cartel.

But Ramirez and Blanco are political rivals who have been locked in a feud for almost the entirety of Blanco’s term in office.

The former America and Chicago Fire star has asked the Mexican Attorney General (Procuraduria General de la Republica) to investigate in a bid to clear his name.

Blanco also believes local police cannot be trusted and wants federal help to ensure justice is served in the case.

"Hopefully the PGR takes charge of the case, only them," Blanco added.

"Here there isn't anything, here I've mentioned several times that here you're defenceless.

"The governor manages everything, so you have to go to the PGR in [Mexico City] and hope the issue is really resolved because this is a disgrace."
