Raonic, 25,  saw his big-serving dismantled by a near-perfect Murray display in July when the Scot landed his second SW19 crown.

Murray has won his opening two matches at the O2 Arena, and a win against Stan Wawrinka on Friday afternoon will guarantee top spot in his group and a semi-final meeting with the Canadian.

And after deservedly sneaking a tight first set against Austrian outsider Thiem he broke at he start of the second set to win 7-6 (7/5) 6-3.

Raonic had American legend John McEnroe in his corner, just like at Wimbledon.

And he said of his victory: “I got fortunate at the end of the first set to hit three aces.

That helped me out. I stuck with my weapons and I was fortunate to get through. It was a great match for me. It wasn’t a round-robin match, it was a quarter-final.”

McEnroe’s presence alongside Riccardo Piatti and Carlos Moya took Raonic‘s coaching contingent back up to three.

Raonic joked: “If the other two aren’t right, hopefully one will be.”
