Farah was pipped to gold in the 5000m by Ethiopia’s Muktar Edris who then paid tribute to Farah by celebrating with the ‘Mobot’.

56,000 people crammed into the London Stadium to watch Farah run his final race as he collapsed to the floor in tears after coming second.

Farah had been hoping to win his 11th major title by completing a World Championships double following his thrilling win in the 10,000m seven days ago.

But it wasn’t to be as Farah lapped up the applause from the crowd with the Union Jack flag draped over his shoulders.

And the 34-year-old, who conquered the London Olympics with two golds in 2012, stood on top of the iconic London Eye on Sunday morning in a stylish farewell.

Farah will now take to the roads in the marathon after calling time on his track and field days.

Speaking after his final race, Farah said: "It’s been a long journey but it’s been incredible.

“It didn’t quite hit home until after I crossed the line and had a couple of moments to myself when I realised – this is it.

"I gave it all - I didn't have a single bit left at the end."
