Netball, surfing, dodgeball and now maybe Manchester United? Welcome to Super League champions Wigan Warriors’ pre-season.

WIGAN Warriors have definitely done something different this pre-season – now they may call on Jose Mourinho.

The Super League champions are trying to mix things up ahead of their title defence as much as possible.

Wigan Warriors’ players have mixed it up in pre-season, including a session with netball side Manchester Thunder

And the players have been taken well and truly out of their comfort zones, even not knowing where they were going!

Coach Shaun Wane and his staff have always been keen on sampling how things are done in different sports and walks of life, and the preparation for 2017 has been no different.

And they have just returned from a four day ‘road to nowhere’ trip where the squad had to pack into camper vans and were only given postcodes of where they needed to be heading.

It saw them end up in South Wales before heading north for more activities – now it is back to the familiar sights of Wigan.

Even Wigan coach Shaun Wane ended up in a camper van on their ‘road to nowhere’ trip

Wane also put his players through a training session with Manchester Thunder netball side and some of Wigan Athletic’s footballers.

They are also hoping to train with a dodgeball side and maybe pairing up with Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United!

But it is not all laughing and joking ahead of what could be a long old year – Wane revealed they get plenty from it.

He said: “We’ve been in at Wigan Athletic and we’re going to try and get in at Manchester United.

“We’ve also got dodgeball coming up, we’ve got various things we’ll be doing. I told the players and staff here that once a week, I want some sport organising, I don’t want it to be all rugby league.

“The netball was unbelievable.

Wigan maybe Super League champions but their accommodation on their trip was far from luxury!

“It was very, very tough for the players but the hand-eye co-ordination stuff suited us down to the ground.

“I got some drills off them and the girls from Manchester Thunder are going to come down and watch us train too.

“The players were all very confident going to Wigan Athletic but a lot of them think they’re better than they actually are!”

Wigan won the Grand Final after defying a crippling injury list – Wane admitted it was his sweetest ever victory.

Even the practices to finish in the corner were different!

But that has all changed now, now the focus is very much on winning the League Leaders’ Shield, Grand Final, Challenge Cup and the World Club Challenge over Australian champs Cronulla.

Wane added: “We’re back at it.

“It was a magnificent victory for us but we’re looking forward to next year now.

“We’ve a chance of four things and we want to have a good go.”
