New Huddersfield boss Simon Woolford started his job on computer in Australia

SIMON Woolford has already learned that seeing is believing after trying to change Huddersfield by computer!

The new Giants coach was forced to wait in Australia while his visa was processed after landing the chance of replacing sacked Rick Stone.

But stand-in Chris Thorman turned to technology to get the new man’s ideas, despite the time difference.

Now Woolford, described by veteran Ryan Hinchcliffe as a ‘grubby little hooker’ during his playing days at Canberra, has already picked up extra ways of improving just six days after arriving.

He said: “Sometimes I’d get videos of training and games sent to me and Chris showed me a training session over Skype. Doing that worked quite well and I could spot a few things clearly.

“I watched a couple of games and at least one training session and before games, we’d talk about how we wanted to play. Considering I had to wait a few weeks, it was good to get started.

“But now I’m here, there’s heaps of things I’ve spotted. There’s a lot of areas where we can improve, both individually and as a team.

“I discussed with Chris, Luke Robinson and Mark Andrews what we needed to improve and change and they’ve been introducing them over the last three or four weeks.

“We’ve got a good enough squad to win a lot more games but there’s plenty more to come from us.”

Woolford has recruitment and retention issues. Not least involving Hinchcliffe who says he wants to stay beyond this season.

But despite having ‘three or four’ calls a day he is determined not to turn the Giants into an NRL retirement home.

As he prepares for his first match in charge, tonight’s Challenge Cup quarter-final with Catalans Dragons, he added: “I was having people saying, ‘Don’t forget me.’

“There’s always guys over there looking to come over, especially ones at the back end of their career but I don’t want players who are coming just because they can get another year or two out of their career, we’re looking for ones with plenty to offer.

“We’re going to be selective with the players we target. We’ve discussed where we need to improve the squad and we’re always looking for players to come in both from here and overseas.”
