New Year Honours: Jonathan Agnew reveals he’s been sent soiled toilet roll for ten years as he celebrates receiving MBE

JONATHAN Agnew celebrated receiving an MBE in the New Year Honours by revealing someone has been sending him soiled toilet roll in the post for the past ten years.

The BBC’s cricket correspondent has been honoured for his services to broadcasting in the latest batch of honours announced today.

And in comical fashion he has asked his decade-long stalker to now ensure the envelopes containing the disgusting token are addressed properly.

Sporting stars scooped the big awards in the New Year Honours announced today, with Jessica Ennis-Hill, Mo Farah and Andy Murray heading the list

Agnew, 56, tweeted: “Can I ask the charming individual who for ten years has sent me a soiled piece of toilet paper every Test now address the envelope correctly?”

The revelation provoked a raft of interest on social media, especially when the Test Match Special commentator went on to say each letter has a west country postmark.

It led to BBC Match of the Day host Gary Lineker to speculate whether former England rugby union star Brian Moore was secretly the man responsible.

In a message that tagged in the former prop and now BBC commentator, Lineker said: “Let me guess; sent from a Bath postcode?”

Agnew’s gong marks his career in cricket that first saw him play three Tests for England before making the successful switch into broadcasting at the end of his playing career.

The former Leicestershire pace bowler was named one of Wisden’s five Cricketers of the Year in 1988, before hanging up his playing kit to move into journalism when he retired.

It was his comment about Sir Ian Botham’s dismissal against the West Indies in 1991, saying “he just didn’t quite get his leg over”,  that left legendary broadcaster Brian Johnston in fits of laughter. It went on to be voted the greatest sporting commentary ever in a BBC poll.
