New Yorks Mets slugger Wilmer Flores breaks his own nose in freak accident by hitting a foul ball into his own face

NEW YORK METS star Wilmer Flores was forced to exit Saturday’s game against Houston Astros after a freak accident left him with a broken nose.

The infielder was up against Astros starter Brad Peacock in the fourth inning when he managed hit the ball directly into his face.

Blood immediately gushed from his nose as he fell to the ground in agony.

Team trainers and his manager Terry Collins immediately rushed to his aide.

The Mets later confirmed that he was rushed to hospital for X-rays but did not confirm his condition.

However, preliminary reports are claiming that he suffered a broken nose which could have ended his season.

Collins said: “It’s the first time I’ve seen it. I’ve seen it off the ground, but I’ve never seen it off the bat.

“It’s scarier when you go out there and the blood is pouring out of your nose.”

Despite his pain, Flores can count himself fortunate that the ball did not hit him in his eye – which could have potentially caused permanent vision damage.

Mets went on to lose the second game of their series against the Astros 4-1.

The teams were playing part of a double header after the Astros returned home following the devastation caused in the city by Hurricane Harvey.

They were also victorious in the earlier game as they triumphed 12-8 over the Mets.

Flores had personally fared much better in that game as he hit his 18th homer of the season and his first grand slam for over a year.

It’s the second freak accident to end a Mets’ player’s season in ten days – outfielder Michael Conforto dislocated his shoulder and tore part of the joint during the team’s 3-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks when he swung and missed at a pitch.
