THE NFL has been rocked by the death of linebacker Edwin Jackson on the eve of the Super Bowl.

The 26-year-old Indianapolis Colts star was killed by a suspected drunk driver.

Jackson was one of two people who died following the accident on the Interstate 70 in Indiana at 4am on Sunday morning.

Police confirmed he and 54-year-old Jeffrey Monroe were stood near a stopped car when a black Ford pick-up truck drove onto the hard shoulder and mowed them down.

Local newspapers have said that Monroe is a ride share operator and had pulled over to let Jackson out of the vehicle due to feeling unwell.

Sgt. John Perrine said in a statement to the Indianapolis Star: “One of the people struck was thrown into the centre lane of I-70.

“Shortly after the crash, and before any 911 calls were received, Trooper Ty Mays was driving through the area and noticed a vehicle in front of him make an evasive manoeuvre to the left.

“As he slowed to stop for the crash he struck the body of the victim in the centre lane.”

A 37-year-old man has been arrested after he fled to scene on foot.

Perrine added: “It is believed Gonsales was intoxicated and was driving without a license.

“He was transported to the Marion County Jail, the result of the test for intoxication is pending.”

Jackson has been at the Colts since signing for them in 2015 following a spell with Arizona Cardinals.

In the 2016 NFL season he played in all 16 games and started eight, recording 66 tackles.

The news will not only come as devastating blow to his family but to football fans across America ahead of game’s extravaganza this evening.

The 52nd Super Bowl is being held at the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
