He is now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after the potentially deadly disease was discovered after a medical check-up.

A statement on the League One club’s website said: “Plymouth Argyle wish to advise that Ryan Edwards has been diagnosed with testicular cancer and is to undergo immediate surgery.

“The diagnosis was made when Ryan sought medical advice after experiencing symptoms which he thought prudent to have checked out.

“Ryan will obviously miss a period of football because of surgery but his physical health and mental well-being are our only priority.

“Everyone at Argyle will support him in his recovery in every possible way.

“We ask supporters and the media to respect the privacy of Ryan and his family at this time.”

Plymouth supporters have been urged to show their support for the centre-back via social media.

The Green Army can send well wishes by using the hashtag #WithYouEddy on Twitter.

The former Blackburn Rovers defender joined the Devon-based club last summer from Morecambe.

Edwards has gone on to become a key man in the Derek Adams’ side at the back, forming an impressive defensive partnership with Sonny Bradley.
