Power cut hits as Conor McGregor takes to the scale at the UFC 205 weigh-ins

THERE’S a good chance someone’s lights are going to be put out on Saturday night at UFC 205.

And if Friday’s official weigh-ins are any sort of omen, there’s a good chance it’ll involve Conor McGregor.

The UFC featherweight champion successfully made weight for his lightweight title clash with 155lb champion Eddie Alvarez.

But due to a power surge in the packed room at the Affinia Hotel, the room’s spotlights died as the room was plunged into semi-darkness.

It didn’t hurt McGregor’s mood, however, as he weighed in at a trim 154.4lbs. Alvarez, meanwhile, tipped the scales at 154.6.

All three world title fights were made official, as all four of the remaining title fighters hit their marks ahead of their five-round contests.

Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley was a little closer to his championship weight, making use of the towel as he weighed in naked at 169.8lbs.

His opponent Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson was a full pound under the 170lb limit, weighing in at 169.

And the third title fight on the card was secured, as Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Karolina Kowalkiewicz both weighed in at 114.4lbs for their strawweight championship bout.

There was late drama, too, as the welterweight bout between Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone and Kelvin Gastelum was scratched from the card after the former TUF winner failed to make weight.

Cerrone successfully made weight at 170.4lbs, meaning for the fight to be sanctioned under New York State rules Gastelum had to weigh in within five pounds.

He was unable to do so backstage, and tweeted to announce that he was forced to withdraw from the card, robbing fan-favourite Cerrone of a chance to fight at Madison Square Garden.

Those same rules worked in Jim Miller's favour, however.

His opponent, Thiago Alves, missed the 156lb limit for their lightweight bout by a whopping 6.6lbs, tipping the scales at 162.2lbs.

It meant Miller, who hadn't weighed in at that point, needed to rehydrate himself up to within five pounds of Alves' weight in order for the fight to take place.

He duly did so and jumped on the scale and registered 157.6lbs, keeping the fight alive.

There were a few lighter moments, too. Michael Johnson danced and posed for the cameras after making weight for his bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov, while a hopeful Tim Kennedy weighed in just in case the UFC could draft in a suitable replacement (we were told Jacare Souza is in New York).

The fighters will now rehydrate fully before taking to the stage at Madison Square Garden later today for the ceremonial weigh-ins in front of a packed crowd.
